Our PhilosophyOur philosophy is one of mutual respect and understanding, not only for one another but for our diversities as individuals. We believe that to be successful in this endeavor, we all must recognize that change must come from within each individual as we understand and seek to accommodate rather than change each other. It is important to know that our goal is NOT to create a static system which forces change and is brittle, with minimal flexibility, but rather a dynamic system that accommodates individual change and understanding of one another. We believe this resiliency is essential in order to respect the diversity that defines the community. We further believe that it is imperative that we all work together, communicate together, and make decisions together. Our life at Sommerville will inevitably contain hardship and strife along with prosperity and cooperation. It is through all of this that we will discover more about each other, understand and ultimately change our minds and views. Our MissionThe mission of Sommerville Young Adult Community is to increase understanding of people from a neurobehavioral perspective, providing a community environment that has been established on research and evidence-based best practices. Our VisionTo maximize the potential of each person by recognizing and building on strengths, increasing self understanding and acceptance, within an informed community. Family ComponentSommerville values and encourages family support and involvement. Families of community members will be invited to participate in family weekends. Information, education, guidance, and support from our staff is available on an ongoing basis. It is important that we all continue to work together to gain knowledge and understanding. Accordingly, Sommerville routinely provides all families with updated literature and research. Youth, adults, and Sommerville community members provide monthly updates. |
